Chennai Welcomes Delivery Workers With India’s First AC Lounges to Rest and Recharge

Chennai launches India’s first air-conditioned rest lounges for gig workers, offering food, grocery, and parcel delivery personnel a safe, dignified space to rest, recharge, and access essential facilities, setting a new standard for inclusive urban planning.

In a move that places worker welfare at the centre of urban planning, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has launched India’s first air-conditioned rest lounges exclusively for gig workers.

Designed for food, grocery, and parcel delivery personnel, many of whom spend 10 to 12 hours navigating the city in heat, traffic, and rain, these lounges offer more than just shelter. They represent an acknowledgment of a workforce often overlooked in city infrastructure.

The first lounge, located on Third Avenue in Anna Nagar, accommodates up to 25 people and features comfortable seating, clean drinking water, phone charging stations, hygienic toilets, and secure parking for two-wheelers.  A security guard has also been appointed.

With a minimalist Scandinavian-inspired interior, the space offers a calm and professional atmosphere, something rarely available to gig workers during their shifts.

This pilot project, built at Rs 25 lakh, was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin.

Another lounge is currently being built in T. Nagar, with plans to open several more across the city, including in Mylapore, Royapettah, and KK Nagar. Officials have said the scheme could expand to ten locations, depending on usage and feedback.

For many delivery workers, especially women, these lounges offer a sense of safety and dignity. Chennai is home to more than 500,000 gig workers, and this initiative is among the first in India to formally support them with dedicated facilities.

With rising demand for delivery services, the city’s efforts could serve as a model for others, making sure that those who keep our cities moving are finally given a place to pause.
