Seshadri Shivakumar, a civil engineer by profession, embarked on an extraordinary journey by successfully cultivating Kashmiri saffron in the unlikely climate of Kerala.
Driven by a desire to break free from the traditional nine-to-five routine, he ventured into aeroponic farming—a method that demands precise environmental conditions. Many were sceptical of his ambitious project, given Kerala’s hot and humid weather, which starkly contrasts with the cool climate typically required for saffron cultivation.
However, Seshadri embraced the challenge with determination.
After thorough research and farm visits, he set up his own aeroponic setup with an initial investment of Rs 10 lakh, starting with 400 kilograms of saffron bulbs — despite having no prior experience in farming.
In a 225 sq ft space, he meticulously created the ideal environment for saffron growth using chillers, dehumidifiers, and specialised grow lights. His setup is fully automated and remotely controlled, enabling him to manage other ventures alongside.
Remarkably, within just a year, Seshadri earned Rs 12 lakh from his saffron venture. He has since shared his knowledge with over 100 individuals, helping them replicate his success.
His innovative approach not only defied the odds but also turned a bold idea into a thriving business — one that is now inspiring others to explore saffron farming as a viable opportunity.
