A mother’s love and support can help a child conquer the highest mountain, swim the deepest ocean and overcome the most impossible of tasks.
For Dr Rekha, her mother’s support took her from living in a Mumbai chawl to becoming a respected cancer researcher!
She writes about her journey and her mother’s unrelenting support in a Humans of Bombay post.
“My mother taught us two rules: One, family comes first and two, if we put good out in the world, it’ll come back to us in some way,” she begins.
Dr Rekha’s parents had relocated to Mumbai, and the family of seven lived in a cramped one-room flat. Her mother never got the opportunity to pursue her education, but she wanted her kids to have a better life for themselves.
While every day was a struggle, Dr Rekha’s mother encouraged her daughter to do her best, academically. “My mother has been my backbone. In college, I came down with Typhoid during my last year. My doctor told me to rest and miss my final exams. I still went and ended up failing! I was crying continuously when my mother asked, ‘Did you try your best?’ I said yes. ‘That’s all you need to do’,” writes Dr Rekha.
